That's because the singer/songwriter purposefully hides her face during performances and interviews. As she explained to James Corden from behind her wig during their "Carpool Karaoke" session, "I don't wear this unless there are cameras around. I only wear this to try and maintain a modicum of privacy."
However, like most travelers about to embark on a 15-hour flight, the 41-year-old singer skipped the elaborate costume for her trip to LAX on Wednesday, en route to the Emirates, where she’s headlining the Dubai World Cup. Instead, she looked fresh-faced in Kenzo sweatpants and a matching beige sweatshirt.
That same day, Sia also teased her upcoming appearance on Sesame Street while wearing a wig that showed off her eyes, paired with a giant clown nose that provided extra facial coverage.
As the singer told Corden in their interview, she had deeper reasons for deciding to hide her face in public, stemming from her past history with substance abuse. "I was a singer for 10 or 11 years to mediocre success. I was an alcoholic and a drug addict, and I sobered up and I decided I didn’t want to be an artist anymore because I was starting to get a little bit famous and it was destabilizing in some way," she said. "I thought, ‘What doesn’t exist in pop music at the moment?’ And it was mystery! I was like, 'There’s pictures on Instagram of everyone at the dentist.'"
Sia Makes A Rare Appearance Without Her Wig
It’s nice to see ya, Sia!
“The Greatest” singer and songwriter, who is seldom seen without a massive face-covering wig, looked fresh-faced and gorgeous at the airport in Los Angeles on Wednesday ― no wig in sight.
The 41-year-old told Ellen Degeneres in 2015 that she wears the wigs to maintain her privacy.
“Well, it’s so that I can go to Target and buy a hose if I want to, and/or if I’m in need of a restroom and I can’t find one, I could go by the side of the road and nobody would be following me with a camera trying to get ‘the shot,’” she said.
Fair enough, but why forego face-shielding at LAX, where paparazzi are known to camp out? Perhaps she was on her way to the paparazzi-free terminal built in 2015 to accommodate VIPs. Or, considering the size of some of those famous wigs, maybe she couldn’t fit one in the overhead bin.
Of course, there’s also the fact that airline staff and TSA agents need to see a passenger’s face so they can match it to her passport.
No matter the reason, Sia looks both lovely and like the epitome of airplane outfit goals in her comfy all-beige Kenzo sweatsuit.
What's your secret, Sia? See singer's INCREDIBLE transformation in pictures after shy star, 41, displays a VERY youthful complexion without her signature wig at Los Angeles Airport
She was spotted shunning her signature black and white wig at Los Angeles Airport on Wednesday.
And Sia Furler, 41, looked age-defying, drawing attention to a very youthful complexion.
The singer-songwriter was radiant, dressed in a casual ensemble, before her flight to Dubai, where she is scheduled to perform on Saturday night.
Her trademark short bob was traded for a sleek, long do in a honey shade instead of its usual platinum.
She wore a midriff sweatshirt and beige Kenzo track pants, finishing off her look with a pair of white sneakers.
The Elastic Heart singer, who has battled Graves disease in the past, looked absolutely glowing.
The past seven years has seen Sia undergo quite the physical transformation.
Sia's on stage and red carpet appearances would usually see her covering her face with a thick black and white wig of a blunt cut.
However in November 2010, the chart-topping star was spotted with a blunt platinum cut with bangs, and a less radiant complexion.
Two years on, Sia kept her blunt platinum cut, but opted for a pared-down beauty look.
The chandelier star's complexion however appeared slightly tauter and blemish-free.
December 2013 saw Sia then switch up her look to much longer tresses.
The more relaxed do, usually swept up, drew attention to the personality's radiant complexion.
Sia usually goes to extreme lengths to hide her identity.
She previously revealed she purposely conceals her face behind wigs and over-sized hats in order to keep her privacy.
However in an interview with 2DayFM in April 2015, Sia told then hosts Maz Compton and Dan Debuf that she was ready to ditch the iconic wig.
'As I had hoped and planned, it's the blonde bob that's become iconic,' she said, adding that her new look would be inspired by her album, This Is Acting.
'I am going to do prosthetics, so I'm going to alter my face slightly, so you can't really peg if I have had surgery, if I have had a little bit of weird surgery.
'I'm not going to do any kind of whacky stuff, I am still going to look like a human being,' Sia candidly revealed.
Meanwhile, early last year, Sia revealed why she chose to cover her face with headwear.
The revelation came during James Corden's Carpool Karaoke Skit.
She said: 'I don't wear this thing unless there are cameras around. Just trying to maintain a modicum of privacy.'
